Strengthening Your Relationship While Parenting a Child with Autism: Family Therapy in Kansas
Event Description:
Raising a child with autism can involve coordinating support from many different people—teachers, medical professionals, speech and occupational therapists, behavioral specialists, and others. Parents and caregivers are often the ones bringing all of these pieces together while also providing the day-to-day care, encouragement, and advocacy their child needs.
Yet caregivers need support, too.
Parents Need A Herd Too is an online support group for parents and caregivers of children with autism who want a place to connect with people who truly understand their experiences. The group provides an opportunity to talk openly about the emotional ups and downs of parenting, discover ways to care for yourself while caring for your child, and develop supportive relationships with other parents navigating similar experiences.
Target Audience:
Parents or couples who are the primary caregivers of a child between the ages of 2 and 18 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder are welcome to participate.

Session Focus
Maintaining connection and strengthening relationships while navigating the demands of caregiving.
Session Purpose
The ongoing responsibilities of caring for a child with autism can affect a couple’s time, communication, emotional energy, and sense of connection. Parents may find themselves focused so heavily on their child’s needs that their own relationship begins to receive less attention. This session provides an opportunity to talk openly about these challenges and consider how couples can continue to nurture their relationship while meeting the needs of their family.
Participants will explore the importance of communication, shared responsibility, emotional connection, and mutual support. The goal is not to add another expectation to an already full plate, but to identify small, meaningful ways to protect the relationship and help partners feel like a team. Family therapy in Overland Park, KS can also provide additional support for couples and families who want help navigating these relational challenges.
Session Objectives
By the end of the session, parents will identify practical ways to strengthen communication, connection, and support within their relationship. Participants will also reflect on how they can intentionally make their relationship a priority while balancing the many demands of parenting and caregiving. For families needing more individualized support, a family therapist in Overland Park, KS can help couples and family members work through relationship challenges together.
