Grief Support (Week 9)
10-Week Grief Support Group
Event Description:
This 10-week grief support group is designed to provide a safe, supportive space for individuals navigating the complex emotions of loss.
Each weekly session builds upon the last, guiding participants through the natural, non-linear process of grief using Worden’s Four Tasks of Mourning as a framework. We begin with introductions, co-creating group expectations, and developing an understanding of grief as a unique and personal journey.
In the following weeks, we move through the tasks of mourning by exploring what it means to accept the reality of the loss, experience the pain of grief, adjust to life without the deceased, and eventually reinvest in life while maintaining a meaningful connection to the person who has died.
As the group progresses, we also explore the impact of grief on personal identity, the role of memory and continuing bonds, and how to navigate social expectations and support systems.
In our final weeks together, we reflect on grief in the context of broader life changes and honor the process of healing by integrating the loss into the ongoing story of our lives.
This group emphasizes emotional safety, mutual support, and the understanding that healing does not mean forgetting—it means learning how to carry your grief with you in a meaningful and life-giving way.

This group is designed for adults who are navigating the loss of a loved one and are seeking a safe, compassionate space to explore their grief. Week 1: Parenting with the Brain in Mind
Session Focus:
Learn the foundational principles of “whole-brain” parenting—understanding how the different parts of the brain work together and how integration supports emotional health, relationships, and resilience.
Session Purpose:
When children (or adults) are overwhelmed, they’re often operating from the reactive, emotional part of the brain. By understanding brain integration, parents and caregivers can recognize what’s happening beneath the behavior and respond in ways that help children feel safe, seen, and soothed. This awareness transforms power struggles into moments of connection and builds long-term emotional regulation skills.
Session Objectives:
Participants will:
Identify the basic structure and functions of the brain related to emotional and behavioral regulation.
Understand the concept of integration—how connecting the “upstairs” (thinking) and “downstairs” (feeling) brain leads to healthier responses.
Recognize signs of disintegration (when the child is “flipping their lid”).
Learn practical strategies to respond rather than react during difficult moments.
Begin building a foundation for using brain-based approaches throughout the series.

Session Focus:
Explore how the left and right sides of the brain work together to create balanced thinking and feeling—and learn practical tools to help children integrate logic and emotion during everyday challenges.

Children (and adults) often get “stuck” in either their emotional right brain (overwhelmed by feelings) or their logical left brain (shut off from emotion). By understanding how to engage both hemispheres, caregivers can guide children toward emotional balance and connection.

Participants will:
Understand the distinct functions of the left (logical) and right (emotional) hemispheres of the brain.
Recognize signs that a child is “stuck” in one side of the brain.
Learn and practice “connect and redirect”—a strategy that begins with right-brain empathy before moving to left-brain logic.
Identify ways to use storytelling and naming emotions (“name it to tame it”) to help children make sense of their experiences.
Continue building foundational skills for supporting whole-brain integration and emotional resilience.

Participants will learn tools to respond calmly during challenging moments, support healthy decision-making, promote empathy, and build stronger, more connected relationships. Through guided exercises, discussion, and reflection, this series empowers caregivers to apply brain-based approaches in daily life for lasting positive impact.

Children often act from the downstairs brain when stressed, scared, or frustrated, which can lead to emotional outbursts or impulsive behavior. Understand the difference between the upstairs brain and downstairs brain, including their functions and limitations.
Recognize behaviors that indicate a child is operating from the downstairs brain.
Learn strategies to engage the upstairs brain through calm connection and problem-solving techniques.

Grief Support for the Holidays in Kansas City (Week 5)
7-Week Kansas City Grief Support Group
Event Description:
This 7-week grief support group is designed for adults who are navigating grief during the holiday season, whether from a recent loss or a loss that feels more acute at this time of year. The group welcomes individuals who find that traditions, family gatherings, or seasonal reminders heighten feelings of sadness, loneliness, or disconnection.

By the end of this session, participants will:
Create a safe, confidential, and supportive group environment.

Group Topic: Emotional Regulation Skills for Adolescent Girls with Anxiety
Session Focus: Exploring Personal Values
Session Purpose
The purpose of this session is for participants to explore their personal values and articulate them to others if they feel comfortable. This lays the groundwork for handling anxiety because it draws the participant's attention to who they are, what is important to them, and why they are striving to improve their anxiety. As adolescents, these participants are in a developmental stage where they are still forming their identity, and fixating on strengths, desires, and reasons for living outside of their anxiety will provide them with a deeper sense of purpose and identity. This pillar of ACT provides a more concrete direction for the acceptance and committed action techniques that will be taught later on.
Session Objectives
1. The first objective is for the participants to build rapport with one another. Values are an integral part of one’s identity and self-disclosure can be as basic or as deep as each participant feels comfortable. Commonalities between participants’ values will aid in building rapport.
2. The second objective is to collaboratively establish the goals and norms for the psychotherapy group.
3. The third objective is for participants to identify five personal values.
