Grief Support (Week 8)

10-Week Grief Support Group

Event Description:
This 10-week grief support group is designed to provide a safe, supportive space for individuals navigating the complex emotions of loss.

Each weekly session builds upon the last, guiding participants through the natural, non-linear process of grief using Worden’s Four Tasks of Mourning as a framework. We begin with introductions, co-creating group expectations, and developing an understanding of grief as a unique and personal journey.

In the following weeks, we move through the tasks of mourning by exploring what it means to accept the reality of the loss, experience the pain of grief, adjust to life without the deceased, and eventually reinvest in life while maintaining a meaningful connection to the person who has died.

As the group progresses, we also explore the impact of grief on personal identity, the role of memory and continuing bonds, and how to navigate social expectations and support systems.

In our final weeks together, we reflect on grief in the context of broader life changes and honor the process of healing by integrating the loss into the ongoing story of our lives.

This group emphasizes emotional safety, mutual support, and the understanding that healing does not mean forgetting—it means learning how to carry your grief with you in a meaningful and life-giving way.

Target Audience:

This group is designed for adults who are navigating the loss of a loved one and are seeking a safe, compassionate space to explore their grief. Whether your loss was recent or years ago, this group is for anyone who wants support in making sense of their grief, connecting with others who understand, and learning how to move through the grieving process at their own pace.

Week 8:

Session Focus:

Coping with Social Expectations and Support Systems

Session Purpose:

The purpose of Week 8 is to examine the social context of grief, including how cultural norms, expectations, and misconceptions can impact the grieving process.

This session encourages participants to reflect on the external pressures they may face, such as assumptions about how long grief should last or how it should be expressed.

Using the Grief Myths worksheet, we will explore and challenge common misconceptions.

The session also focuses on the importance of building a reliable support system, and offers tools for both seeking and offering support in ways that honor each person’s unique grief experience.

Session Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Identify common social expectations and myths surrounding grief and examine how these may affect their own grieving process.

  • Explore the emotional impact of feeling misunderstood or unsupported by others.

  • Use the Grief Myths worksheet to challenge internalized beliefs about how grief "should" look.

  • Understand the value of a personal support system during the grieving journey.

  • Learn effective strategies for both seeking support from others and offering support to those who are grieving.

  • Begin identifying people or communities that can serve as safe, consistent sources of support.
