Event Description:
Raising a child with autism can involve coordinating support from many different people—teachers, medical professionals, speech and occupational therapists, behavioral specialists, and others. Parents and caregivers are often the ones bringing all of these pieces together while also providing the day-to-day care, encouragement, and advocacy their child needs.

Yet caregivers need support, too.

Parents Need A Herd Too is an online support group for parents and caregivers of children with autism who want a place to connect with people who truly understand their experiences. The group provides an opportunity to talk openly about the emotional ups and downs of parenting, discover ways to care for yourself while caring for your child, and develop supportive relationships with other parents navigating similar experiences.

Session Focus

Reflecting on the group experience, recognizing personal growth, and identifying ways to continue moving forward with support.

Session Purpose

As the support group comes to a close, parents will have an opportunity to look back at the goals they identified at the beginning and consider how their experiences throughout the group have shaped their perspective. Participants will reflect on the ways they have grown, the challenges they have navigated, and the accomplishments—both large and small—that they can carry with them beyond the group.

The session will also emphasize that the end of the group does not mean the end of support. Building a network of understanding people and continuing to prioritize personal well-being can make a meaningful difference in the ongoing parenting journey. When additional support is needed, therapy for teens in Overland Park, KS or family therapy in Overland Park, KS may be another resource for families as their needs evolve.

Session Objectives

By the end of the session, parents will identify ways they have incorporated self-care and recognize the importance of maintaining supportive connections beyond the group. Participants will reflect on the value of having others who understand their experiences and leave with a stronger sense that they are part of a community and do not have to navigate the parenting journey alone.
